Wicked is a Broadway musical that has been captivating audiences all over the world. Recently, the movie project was greenlit and even though Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth are not on board to reprise the roles they originated, Elphaba and Glinda, the production is expected to hit theaters sometime by late 2017 or early 2018. And, how surprising I was to find those ideas of what could've been Wicked if it was made as a Disney animated feature.
Minkyu Lee is a Disney animator and collaborated in movies like 'The Princess and the Frog' and 'Frozen'. In his portfolio, he imagined an animated version of Wicked with its beloved characters Elphada, Glinda, Fyero, Madam Morrible, the Wizard of Oz and Chistery, the flying monkey.
Lee brought this idea for life when he was a CalArts student and dreamed about being part of Disney's staff as an animator. As soon as he got the job and his drawings hit the Internet, Wicked fans thought the studio was developing a project for the musical. But, unfortunately, Wicked was never on Disney plans. Lee's ideas, however, gives us some taste of the Oz's people through the Walt Disney's point of view.
Here we have Lee's concept for the 'Defying Gravity' number.
